Hundreds of Iraqis killed in the last week

Good afternoon,

Murder continues in Iraq, as Mr. Bush, begins to bring surge troops back to the US. Was the surge nothing but a band aid? Did the surge give the Iraqi government the "breathing room" it needed in order to achieve the key goal of cutting deals that would bring the minority Arabs into the government and thereby weaken or end the insurgency. But Iraqi politicians are STILL gridlocked over sharing power and Iraqi citizens appear to have little hope that Iraqi forces can control Al-Qaida in Iraq and renegade Shiite malitias on their own. All that remain are a maze of concrete barriers which divide Shiite and Sunni's neighborhoods.

So, the new surge in violence has begun. In just this last week, hundreds of Iraqis have been killed, and this, in my opinion is just a small taste of increased violence to come.

Here is a summary of the last several days of killings in Iraq:

Tuesday 11 March: 85 dead
Baghdad: gunman kills 1 riding on minibus; 5 bodies.
Salahuddin
Dhuluiya: suicide car bomber kills 8 at checkpoint.
Tikrit: 3 die in US airstrike.
Samarra: 20 bodies found in mass grave -5 of them children.
Wasit
Kut: 17 are killed in clashes, 5 of them children.
Diyala
Muqdadiya: 2 bodies.
Dhi Qar
Nassiriya: roadside bomb hits bus carrying mourners returning from a funeral, kills 16.
Babil
Yusufiya: bomb explodes in building, kills 1.
Iskandariya: gunmen kill 1.
Anbar
Thar Thar: suicide car bomber kills 2 Sahwa members.
Ninewa
Mosul: 5 are killed when gunmen attack police checkpoint; 3 die in a car when US helicopter opens fire.
Basra
Basra: gunmen kill 1.

Monday 10 March: 34 dead
Baghdad: car bomb kills 1, Sadr City; car bomb kills 1, Shaab; suicide bomber kills 2 during attack on US troops, Mansour; 3 bodies.
Diyala
Kanaan: 18-year-old female suicide bomber kills tribal chief, his 5-year-old niece and 2 others outside his house.
Muqdadiya: suicide bomber kills 3.
Interpreter killed in eastern Diyala during attack on US troops.
Salahuddin
Baiji: gunmen kill policeman.
Ninewa
Mosul: roadside bomb kills 1; gunmen kill mother and son in their car; gunmen kill 2 policemen; 2 bodies.
Basra
Basra: body of neurosurgeon is found.
Sulaimaniya: suicide bomber kills 10 outside hotel.

Sunday 9 March: 20 dead
Baghdad: roadside bomb kills 1, Zafaraniya; 2 bodies.
Salahuddin
Tikrit: car bomb kills policeman.
Diyala
Khalis: 6 bodies found in mass grave.
Ninewa
Mosul: car bomb kills 2; gunmen kill 1; 3 bodies.
Anbar
Haditha: roadside bomb kills 4.

Saturday 8 March: 129 dead
Baghdad: 15 bodies found, 11 of them decomposed.
Diyala
Baquba: roadside bomb kills mother (40), daughter (22) and son(10); roadside bomb kills another civilian following previous attack; gunmen kill 1; roadside bomb hits minibus, kills 2.
Khalis: mass grave is found, containing an estimated 100 bodies.
Babil
Haswa: gunmen kill 2 (father and son).
Mussayab: boy is killed by roadside bomb.
Kirkuk
Hawija: roadside bomb kills Sahwa member.
Anbar
Thar Thar: 3 bodies.

Friday 7 March: 16 dead
Baghdad: 3 bodies.
Ninewa
Mosul: suicide car bomber attacks police station, kills 4 policemen and a girl; 2 policemen are killed in clashes with gunmen; roadside bomb kills 1.
Diyala
Albu Taema: 3 bodies are found in mass grave.
Kirkuk
Tuz Khurmato: gunmen kill mother and son.

Thursday 6 March: 86 dead
Baghdad: two bomb attacks kill 68, Karrada; roadside bomb kills 1, Waziriya; 2 bodies.
Basra
Basra: gunmen kill policeman; 1 body found.
Diyala
Khanaqeen: roadside bomb kills policeman.
Ninewa
Mosul: prison guard dies in bomb explosion; 4 bodies of prison guards, abducted the day before, are found.
Babil
Iskandariya: 2 women are killed when roadside bomb strikes their car.
Hilla: body found.
Anbar
Heet: 3 shop owners are shot dead by Iraqi police, after coming under attack by unknown gunmen.
Arbil
Body found in the west of the province.

Tuesday 5 March: 21 dead
Baghdad: gunmen kill lorry driver,Shaab; roadside bomb kills 1, Mahmoudiya; 4 bodies.
Salahuddin
Samarra: suicide car bomb kills 2 Sahwa members.
Balad: 2 villagers are killed by gunmen; roadside bomb kills 1.
Kirkuk
Kirkuk: gunmen kill academic; roadside bomb kills 1.
Ninewa
Mosul: gunmen kill 4 policemen; 3 bodies found, one decapitated.
Diyala
Udhaim: 1 killed by roadside bomb.
